The number of Canadians over the age of 65 is quickly increasing. Over the next 30 years, the population of seniors in Canada is expected to double.  At the same time as Canada’s senior population is growing, so too is the need for housing that matches the needs of an aging population. Smooth moves for seniors.
While it is clear that the housing industry must be prepared to respond to this challenge, findings from the Atlantic Seniors Housing Research Alliance (ASHRA), a five-year research project looking at the long-term housing needs of Atlantic Canadian seniors, suggests that few communities are preparing themselves for the upcoming demographic shift.  This a concern, in light of the fact that as Canadian baby boomers age, they are entering a stage in their lives when making housing decisions requires careful consideration, and the role of the Realtor will be even more important in their decision-making process. 
We will see the effect of population aging in terms of the location of residences, the design characteristics of new homes, and the range of financing options available to senior boomers.
